NHL Daily Updates: Checking in on the Latest News, Off-Season Schedule and More
September 21, 2014
Now that training camps around the NHL have gotten underway, there’s a definite sense of excitement among hockey fans. The 2014-15 season isn’t too far off, and with each day we’re getting some newfound insight. That said, let’s take our daily look around the league and see who’s making news.
The Maple Leafs’ Tyler Bozak was able to skate while wearing his full equipment before the Leafs’ practice session yesterday. He’s day-to-day with an undisclosed condition.
Fans and sources close to the team are hoping this is just a precautionary measure, as Bozak is slated to be a top-liner this year.

Neither Tory Krug nor Reilly Smith was signed as of yesterday, and as a result both were away from the practice sessions. The hope remains that the two will be signed in the very near future, but there’s really no guarantee as to the ultimate outcome.
The Flames’ center Mikael Backlund has been limited during the team’s practice sessions thus far due to an abdominal injury.
The general feeling is that Backlund should be fine for the start of the season, however there is some concern over his injury history.
Elsewhere in Calgary, defenseman Tyler Wotherspoon still hasn’t received contact clearance following his off-season shoulder surgery.
Wotherspoon is likely to make the roster as one of the lower-end blue liners, but he needs to get himself some training camp action first.
Now let’s head over to Columbus and check out the Blue Jackets. Defenseman Ryan Murray is fighting off some soreness due to a knee scope this off-season, but there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of major concern there.
Also, youngster Alexander Wennberg is already impressing his coaching staff in Columbus, as coach Todd Richards spoke very highly of him in his comments yesterday.
Wennberg was a top pick (14 overall) last year and the Jackets are counting on him to step up and make some noise on the top lines. Stay tuned.
