The New York Islanders visit PNC Arena to tangle with the Carolina Hurricanes in the season opener for both teams.
The New York Islanders finished dead last in the Metropolitan and obviously weren't going to win with the make up of the team. To the Islanders credit they made plenty of additions with the hope of making the postseason. The goaltending received an immediate boost with the signing of Jaroslav Halak with defensemen Nick Leddy and Johnny Boychuk hopefully giving the offense a heping hand. The offense received a big helping hand with John Tavares returning from a knee injury which is an automatic upgrade as well as the signings of forwards Nikolav Kulemin and Mikhail Grabovski.

The Carolina Hurricanes didn't make any eye popping moves in the off season on the ice although the management made changes at GM and named Bill Peters as coach. The Hurricanes have Cam Ward and Anton Khudobin in the nets and have not named a number one yet. The Canes might struggle offensively with Jeff Skinner out for a prolonged period with a concussion while Jordan Staal is out until after Christmas with a broken leg. With the team missing a ton of scoring to kick off the season they might need the defense and goaltending to shoulder the load unless a few players can step up in the scoring department.
The Islanders are 1-6 in the last seven bouts with Carolina while the over has gone 18-6 in the last 24 match ups. The trends say the Canes and the over are the way to go but with Carolina missing some key players I'll side with New York but check back by Friday afternoon...
