Los Angeles Kings vs. Edmonton Oilers - 10/14/14
Edmonton Oilers (0-1-1) at Los Angeles Kings (1-1-1)
NHL Hockey: Tuesday
The Line: Los Angeles Kings -200 / Edmonton Oilers +181 --- Over/Under: 5 See the Latest Odds
The Oilers look to spoil the party in Los Angeles with their first win of the year while the defending champs look to move above .500.
The Oilers have had another tough start to the season as they dropped their home opener against the Flames before giving up a third period lead against the Canucks in which they ultimately dropped in a shootout and now they head into the Staples Center to face the defending Cup champions. Edmonton has long been at the bottom of the league standings and haven’t made the playoffs since 2006 and while some are expecting this to be the season they finally return to hockey’s second season they may be wearing their rose coloured glasses while doing so. Edmonton is a better team this year than last at least on paper and they should make strides but I don’t think the playoffs is realistic yet and I think a top 10 draft pick is more on the horizon of expectation than competing in the final week for a playoff spot. Edmonton will likely turn back to Ben Scrivens in this one as he plays against his former team and that perhaps could be the motivation the Oilers need to play an inspired game in front of their goalie.

The Kings lost a tough one in their season opener against the team whose dreams they shattered in the first round of last year’s playoff run as the San Jose Sharks came in and found a bit of redemption. Los Angeles though is still a very talented team and should have no trouble finding their way back into the playoffs this season and as we know they are a team that thrives in the big game and I think it would surprise very few to see them back in the Cup finals again this year. LA isn’t shy to lay a beating against the league doormats either and don’t really fall victim to the let down spot which many people would have pegged in this position especially with Scrivens coming back to the Staples Center but I don’t see it happening. I am not willing to lay the puck line here though as the Oilers do have some game breakers so in the end I think the best play here is on the total and while Scriv would like to have a great game I see this one going over the number that is given right at the five goal mark.
