The San Jose Sharks and Washington Capitals will play Tuesday night at the Verizon Center.
The San Jose Sharks are off to a solid 2-0 start and have played some of the best defense of any team in the league. Both victories for the Sharks have been shutouts, as Antti Niemi has saved all 34 of hits shots faced and Alex Stalock has saved all 30 of his shots. Niemi has won five of his last six regular season starts. What has helped San Jose during this stretch is the fact it has only allowed seven power play opportunities. Offensively, Patrick Marleau and Tommy Wingels both have two goals, while Brent Burns has three assists. Joe Pavelski leads San Jose with eight shots on goal. Overall, the San Jose Sharks are off to a terrific start and can only hope that continues as they begin a five-game road trip.

The Washington Capitals are 1-1 and coming off a monster road victory over the Boston Bruins. The Capitals are getting great production from goalie Braden Holtby, who has allowed just one goal in 53 shots faced. Holtby has allowed two or less goals in six of his last seven games and has won four of his last six starts overall. Offensively, the Washington Capitals have to be pleased with the start of Alex Ovechkin, as he already has two goals and leads the team with 11 shots on goal. Andre Burakovsky has two assists and John Carlson is second on the team with six shots on goal. The Washington Capitals seem like an improved team from a year ago but it’s going to be critical they take advantage of this three-game homestand and not fall back into old habits.
The Sharks are 8-0 in their last 8 games playing on 2 days rest and 6-2 in their last 8 vs. Eastern Conference. The Capitals are 1-5 in their last 6 home games and 5-2 in their last 7 overall. The Sharks are 9-1 in the last 10 meetings in Washington and 19-3-1 in the last 23 meetings overall.
The Sharks have also dominated the Capitals over the years and until Washington breaks the trend, it's tough to back anybody but the road team here.
