The San Jose Sharks and New York Islanders play a matchup between two undefeated teams Thursday at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
The San Jose Sharks have been playing with a point to prove by dominating on both sides of the ice and will play their third road game of the season. The Sharks success starts with their goaltending, as Alex Stalock and Antti Niemi both have a shutout under their belt, and San Jose’s average of 1.7 goals allowed is good for second in the league. The Sharks have won six straight regular season games when allowing two or less goals. Offensively, Tommy Wingels leads the Sharks with three goals and Brent Burns has four assists. Patrick Marleau and Joe Pavelski have combined for 19 shots on goal, giving the San Jose Sharks an aggressive offensive attack. The one thing the Sharks could improve is their power play, as they’re just 2-15 in their first three games.
USA TODAY Sports
The New York Islanders have been getting the job done on the offensive end, scoring 15 goals in three games, which is the most of any team in the league. Five of the Islanders 15 goals have come on the power play, as they have a power play percentage of over 41 percent. Brock Nelson leads the Islanders with four goals, while John Tavares, Johnny Boychuk and Mikhail Grabovski have each scored two goals apiece. This offensive explosion from the Islanders has been quite impressive, especially when you consider they’re near the bottom of the league with an average of 28 shots per game. Defensively, Jaroslav Halak has started two of the three games for New York and has saved 61 of 67 shots. This will be the second home game for the New York Islanders.
The Sharks are 6-1 in their last 7 games following a win and 0-4 in their last 4 games playing on 1 days rest. The Islanders are 6-0 in their last 6 overall and 9-21 in their last 30 home games. The Sharks are 7-1-1 in the last 9 meetings in New York.
This is probably the best game on the Thursday schedule and while it's likely only a matter of time before the Islanders cool off, we might as well ride the hot hand until it stops paying. New York is in a zone right now and I look for that to continue on its home ice.
