The Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets meet Friday night at the Nationwide Arena.
The Calgary Flames have won back-to-back games and will play their fifth straight road contest. Goalie Karri Ramo has been Calgary’s best player out of the gate, as he’s won both of his starts and has allowed just four goals on 61 save attempts. While Jonas Hiller got off to a rocky start to the season, he allowed just one goal on 50 shots in his last start. What’s really killed the Calgary Flames is their penalty killing, as they've allowed at least one power play goal in four of their first five games and are 25th in the league in power play killing percentage. Offensively, Mason Raymond leads the Flames with three goals, Mark Giordano has four assists and Sean Monahan has 15 shots on goal. The Calgary Flames have played solid hockey to begin the season but must improve on the power play in order to turn the corner.
USA TODAY Sports
The Columbus Blue Jackets play their third straight home home and are 2-1 on the season. The solid start for the Blue Jackets is due to their power play killing, as Columbus has yet to allow a power play goal in five opportunities. Goalie Sergei Bobrovsky has allowed six goals in 82 save chances and has given up just three goals in his first two starts. The Blue Jackets have won seven straight regular season games when Bobrovsky allows two or less goals. Offensively, Cam Atkinson leads Columbus with three goals, Ryan Johansen has scored twice and Nick Foligno has three assists and 11 shots on goal. With the mixture of offense, solid goaltending and power play killing, the Columbus Blue Jackets are off to an impressive start.
The Flames are 6-2 in their last 8 road games and 2-5 in their last 7 games playing on 1 days rest. The Blue Jackets are 1-5 in their last 6 games playing on 2 days rest and 34-79 in their last 113 vs. a team with a winning record. The road team is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings.
The road team has dominated this series and Calgary has been solid away from home to bgin with lately. I'm not a fan of the huge juice for Columbus, which makes the Flames and the plus money the play here.
