The Carolina Hurricanes travel north of the border to take the ice with the Calgary Flames on Thursday.
The Carolina Hurricanes offense was nowhere to be found and their defense couldn't hold up in a 3-1 defeat at Winnipeg on Tuesday. The Jets offense had been stuck in the mud with a mere two goals in their previous four defeats and matched that total with a pair of first period tallies. Adam Lowry and Andrew Ladd found the back of the net within three minutes of the opening frame with Dustin Byfuglien scoring in the second before turning things over to the defense and goaltender Ondrej Pavelec who didn't let the Jets down with a 21 save performance to get the win. The Hurricanes offense was a first period tally off the stick of Jiri Tlusty who scored in the first. Anton Khudobin absorbed the loss with a 23 stop effort being a bit short.

The Calgary Flames couldn't make a late lead hold up and it cost them a win in a 2-1, overtime defeat at the hands of visiting Tampa Bay. This was a defensive struggle with neither team able to light the lamp through two periods. Dennis Wideman scored 1:12 in to the final frame off a pass from Johnny Gaudreau on the power play with the lead lasting until Valtteri Fippula found the back of the net with only 2:16 left in the game. Ondrej Palat gave the visitors the victory with his tally with two minutes remaining in the extra session when his back hander off a rebound of Anton Stralman shot eluded Karri Ramo. Ramo was saddled with the loss with 20 saves with Evgeni Nabakov recording 21 stops to get the victory. Rookie Jonathan Drouin picked up an assist for his first career point for the Lightning.
The Hurricanes are 0-5 in their last 5 overall with the under going 6-1 in Hurricanes last 7 vs. Pacific and 9-2-1 in Hurricanes last 12 road games. For the Flames the under is 3-0-1 in Flames last 4 games playing on 1 days rest and is 5-0-1 in Flames last 6 overall and 3-0-1 in Flames last 4 after allowing 2 goals or less in their previous game. Head to head the Hurricanes are 0-5 in the last 5 meetings in Calgary with the Home team going 5-1 in the last 6 meetings while the Hurricanes are 1-4 in the last 5 meetings. The Hurricanes are stumbling out of the blocks and need a few wins and not dig themselves an early season hole while Calgary would like to buiild some momentum. I'm leaning Calgary as I wait for goalies to be announced so check back Thursday afternoon...
