The Detroit Red Wings head into DC on Wednesday night looking to keep pace with the top dogs of the Atlantic division but they'll have to take down the Capitals in the process as both teams sport identical 4-2-2 records through the first eight games. The Red Wings have a longstanding tradition of making the playoffs and have done so consecutively for over 20 years and while last year it took some magic for them to do so I think they are in a decent spot to continue that streak this year. A large part of the team's success this season as opposed to year's past will be the play of their youngsters and their goaltending as a nice core of budding talent has emerged in Detroit to go alongside Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Dastyuk and perhaps this more than ever the Wings will need a strong season from Jimmy Howard who has proven he can be an elite goaltender in this league. The Wings will turn to Howard here as he will likely go up against Braden Holtby for Washington.
The Capitals endured a tough road trip through Western Canada but return a changed team for the better and now have a home stretch that begins here tonight against the Red Wings. The Caps as mentioned sport a 4-2-2 mark and are just two points back of the Isles for top spot in the division with a game in hand. New head coach Barry Trotz has his team rolling and after spending so many years with the Nashville Predators who are a defensive oriented club I think he brought a sense of stinginess with him that the team is buying in to. Furthermore, Trotz has seen a ton of the Wings over his career and I think he will have a perfect scout on them in this one and as such I think the Caps get it done on home ice at a pretty reasonable price.
