The Calgary Flames and Washington Capitals play Tuesday night at the Verizon Center.
The Calgary Flames have split their last eight games and are in the thick of the Pacific Division race. The Flames offense has really picked up lately by scoring 10 goals in their last two games. Overall, the Calgary Flames have scored a power play goal in five of their last seven games and they’ve won eight of their last nine games when scoring three or more goals. Dennis Wideman and Mason Raymond have combined for 10 goals, Mark Giordano has eight assists and Sean Monahan has 36 shots on goal. With their offense picking up, the Flames are tough to beat, especially with a defense that’s allowing just 2.2 goals per game. Jonas Hiller has allowed 15 goals on 242 shots and Karri Ramo has given up 12 goals on 139 shots faced. The Flames only complaint is a power play killing percentage of 75.7 percent.
USA TODAY Sports
The Washington Capitals have lost four straight games and are really struggling on the defensive end. During this four-game stretch, the Capitals have allowed 18 goals, and they’ve allowed a power play goal in six of their last seven games. The Washington Capitals have lost 10 of their last 11 games when allowing three or more goals. Braden Holtby has allowed 18 goals on 179 shots and Justin Peters has allowed 12 goals on 100 shots. Offensively, Alex Ovechkin leads Washington with six goals, Nicklas Backstrom has nine assists and Troy Brouwer has 28 shots on goal. The Capitals have scored a power play goal in five of their last six games. While the Capitals are doing well on the offensive side, they aren’t going to win many games if the defense continues to struggle at a high clip.
The Flames are 4-1 in their last 5 road games and 2-5 in their last 7 games following a win. The Capitals are 4-1 in their last 5 games playing on 1 days rest and 3-8 in their last 11 home games. The Flames are 1-6-1 in the last 8 meetings in Washington and 1-4 in the last 5 meetings overall.
Not sure how anyone can pay for so much juice when the Washington Capitals have been absolutely brutal on the defensive side. I'll gladly take the Flames and the plus money until Washington gets its act together.
