The Calgary Flames have been one of the biggest surprises to start the 2014-15 NHL season as many predicted this inexperienced group to be among the league doormats but some stellar play from the blue line and a well balanced attack has them right in the mix in the Pacific division through their first 16 games. Calgary was expected to use this season as another transition yeat for a lot of their youngsters and allow them to grow in terms of their skillset and their accountability but they have done that and beyond as the system seems to be working for them and the addition of Jonas Hiller has been huge. Mark Giordano is stealing the limelight though as the blue liner has 18 points in 16 games and is among the league leaders in that category and while he is bound to regress he should be in the running for defensive point leaders if he can stay healthy.
The Hurricanes were the last team in the league to record a victory and while they have been playing much better of late they still find themselves in a state of disarray through their first 13 games of the season. Despite their futility, the Canes have actually played quite well on home ice sporting a 3-1-1 mark so far and with a Flames team coming in that has overachieved a little bit to start their season perhaps the Canes feel this is a good spot for them to start their turnaround and separate themselves from the Blue Jackets in the bottom of the division. While there is still a lot of hockey left to be played I think the Canes will end at or near the bottom of the league standings and will likely be huge sellers at or before the trade deadline and I just don't think they are a very good team and shouldn't be favoured against anyone right now. Take the Flames as a road dog.
