The Penguins look to shake off an ugly loss at the hands of the New York Rangers in their last outing and fend off the fast charging new York Islanders for top spot in the division with a Friday night victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Penguins got off to a fast start this season and are still atop the Metropolitan division as they are 10-3-1 on the season and have points in 8 of their last 10 contests but with a rematch in Pittsburgh against the New York Rangers set for Saturday I wonder if this will be a bit of an oversight game for the Pens as they certainly will have their focus on the Blue Shirts after getting embarrassed at MSG. However, with guys like Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin being so competitive it is hard to write them off in any game especially for someone like Crosby who grew up hating the Leafs and loves to play against them now that he is a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Marc-Andre Fleury is expected to start as he will go up against Jonathan Bernier.
The Maple Leafs have been playing spectacular hockey over the last couple of weeks but their biggest victory of the year came in their last outing as they steamrolled the Boston Bruins and a follow up here against the Penguins would go a long way in establishing this side as an Eastern Conference playoff contender. Toronto got off to a slow start but have gone 7-2-1 in their last 10 games and now find themselves within striking distance of the Canadiens for the division lead which they could very erase with a successful weekend. The Leafs have the Sabres in Buffalo in Saturday so these Friday night encounters are always a tough one to call but I have to like them here in a spot where the Pens will be focused on redemption in a show down with the Rangers on Saturday. This will by no means be a walk in the park but the Leafs deserve a look here as they always seem to show up against the game's top teams.
