The Line: Edmonton Oilers -123 / Arizona Coyotes +112 --- Over/Under: 5.5 See the Latest Odds

The Arizona Coyotes look to build on their best victory of the season when they travel to Edmonton to take on the Oilers on Sunday night. It has been a very up and down year so far for the Coyotes and anyone watching them knows that they need to get more from goaltender Mike Smith. Against the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday night it was backup goalie Devan Dubnyk who came to the rescue. Dubnyk kept the Coyotes in the hockey game in a first period that saw them outshot 12-3. Dubnyk stopped all 12 shots he faced and Martin Hanzal scored his first of three on the night to give Arizona the 1-0 lead. In the second period Hanzal scored twice nine seconds apart and Shane Doan added a marker with just three seconds remaining in the period to put the Coyotes up 4-0. Keith Yandle added a power play goal in the third period as the Coyotes pulled off one of the strangest 5-0 shutouts you’ll see. It wasn’t a pretty game for Arizona but the score makes it look like they played some great hockey. The Coyotes were outshot 35-23 on the night and needed their goaltender to give them an opportunity to win the hockey game. It snapped a three game losing streak and Sunday night the Coyotes are going to look to put a winning streak together with another win over the Oilers.

It has been an equally up and down start to the year for the Oilers to start the season, albeit with much lower expectations heading in. The loss of Taylor Hall has really hurt this club but there just seems to be a bigger problem that plagues this organization year after year. There’s no shortage of young talent in Edmonton but the organization has never been able to subsidize that youth with veterans that can teach them how to be professionals and contribute on a winning hockey team. Edmonton still hasn’t been able to solve their defense and goaltending woes and until those things get fixed it won’t matter how much young offensive talent they have because they aren’t going to win anything in this league. Thursday night it was a pathetic first period that put the Oilers in a hole they were unable to get out of. Edmonton was out shot 17-7 in the opening frame and allowed three goals to fall way behind early on. The Oilers did a good job the rest of the way, out shooting the Ottawa Senators 30-12 over the final two periods. Leon Draisaitl scored his second goal of the year in the second period to get the Oilers on the board and in the third it was Jordan Eberle and Jeff Petry who helped the Oilers tie the game and steal a point in this one. Mike Hoffman would eventually win the game in overtime for the Senators and this one becomes yet another learning experience for this young hockey club. Every team needs to play 60 minutes of hockey if they expect to win in this league. If the Oilers can play the way they did over the final 40 minutes for an entire game on Sunday night they should be in good shape against the Coyotes.

Edmonton Oilers vs. Arizona Coyotes - 11/16/14 NHL Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Neither of these teams should be trusted with the way they’re playing to start the season. Arizona really didn’t look great in their win over Vancouver and the Oilers are so inconsistent it’s hard to get a handle on them. Taking the Coyotes in this one simply because of the value.
