The Senators took one on the chin last night suffering a 4-3 loss to the Red Wings after battling back from two goals down in the third period but ultimately the come back fell short and the Sens have slipped into sixth place in the Atlantic division. Ottawa started the year off strong and are still three games above .500 sitting with a 9-6-4 mark but now continue their road trip in St. Louis against a Blues team that is 8-3 at home and is one of the best teams in the league. Ottawa is a very scrappy bunch that will never lie down for anybody but in the second half of a double header it is very tough to get up for a game on the road especially after losing a heartbreaker the night before so the Sens could find themselves in trouble here. Ottawa will go with Robin Lehner as he will go up against Brian Elliott for the Blues.
The Blues have been business as usual this season as the Western Conference powers continue to assert themselves as a team to beat this season and they have done it without a ton of star power up front but a full collection of very good players. The “S-T-L” line has taken over as one of the most exciting groups in hockey as Jaden Schwartz, Vladimir Tarasenko, and Jori Lehtera have been lighting up the scoresheet and continue to be leaned on as the Blues top point producers alongside the unit of Stastnny, Backes, and Lindstrom. The real strength of this Blues team though is on the back end as they have one of the best blue lines in the NHL led of course by Alex Pietrangelo and Kevin Shattenkirk but the additon of Carl Gunnarsson has been nice and overall the Blues are just a very well balanced team that should do some damage long term this season. However, I am not willing to lay a huge price with them here because they still need to demonstrate they can score the puck at a consistent rate and against a goos team like Ottawa I don't see any value in taking the Blues at this price. I will though play on the total as I think with the style of play both teams use and the goalies being what they are I think we see a very tight game that should finish well shy of the total.
