The Boston Bruins are in the midst of their California road trip and have dropped their last two contests putting them in fifth place in the Atlantic division – a spot that has become very unfamiliar to the perennial Cup contenders. The B's have played well enough this season but haven't been the same dominating force we have seen in the past and while they have played respectably without their captain and defensive stalwart in Zdeno Chara it is clear they are missing the lanky Slovak on the point and could really use his size in a big way. Boston sits with a 14-11-1 mark but are 5-6 on the road which has been their forte over the years as they always have one of the best records in the league away from Boston and if they're going to get back into contention in the Eastern Conference they'll need to start performing better outside of Massachusetts and that starts tonight in San Jose. Tuukka Rask is expected to get the start as he will go up against Antii Niemi.
The San Jose Sharks are starting to turn a corner as they have won back to back games and just when everyone thought that head coach Todd MacLellan was going to be let go the team responds and has temporarily saved his job. The Sharks are still reeling from last year's epic collapse in the first round to the Los Angeles Kings but what a lot of people forget is that LA went on to win the Cup so clearly they were a talented bunch with their backs against the wall and while it was improbable to lose four straight its not as if the Sharks are a bad team. San Jose is going through a bit of a transition as some of their older guys are assuming less responsibility and more is falling to the likes of Couture, Vlasic, and Pavelski but that isn't to say Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau aren't good players anymore and they certainly help with the culture and aura in the dressing room. While the Bruins are a good team I think San Jose will use their physical play and size to match up with Boston and I like the home side to get the win in a close final.
