The Ottawa Senators were the first team to make some moves during this regular season as they let go of former Jack Adams winning coach Paul MacLean after a slow start prompted change and now the team will move forward with interim bench boss Dave Cameron. The Sens were trounced in their first game under Cameron but responded nicely with a 3-2 win against the Bruins in Boston and now they will look for an encore on the road against the suddenly surging Buffalo Sabres. The Sens had fallen short of expectations through the first quarter of the season and with the playoffs looking like an after thought at this point perhaps the change was at the right time as they look forward to rebuilding with much of the current roster still intact. Robin Lehner is slated to get the start between the pipes as he will go up against Jhonas Enroth who is quickly becoming the everyday starter for the Sabres.
Buffalo was one of the worst teams in hockey through the first month and a bit and many were projecting them to finish at or near the bottom of the league standings, and while there is still a lot of hockey left they appear as though they have turned a corner as they have won three in a row and seven of their last 10. The Sabres are still four games under .500 but for all of their well publicized woes they still have a winning record on home ice and with the Sens in town it could be another great opportunity for them to extend their winning streak and silence some of the critics who gave them no shot at doing anything this season. While I think the playoffs is a lofty expectation I do think the Sabres can continue their winning ways and perhaps finish the year with some positive momentum and while Ottawa is probably the better team on paper I think the teams are a lot closer than you think and getting the home team at plus money is a gift here.
