The Sabres got off to a wretched start this season and many had them projected to finish near the bottom of the standings but at the moment they are silencing their critics and playing with an amount of passion and heart that other teams are envious of. Buffalo fought back after blowing a three goal lead last night against the Senators and stole the second point by winning in a shootout and now they head into Winnipeg with a shot at jumping past Ottawa and out of the Atlantic division basement. Buffalo's surge has them well clear of the league basement as that battle is now between the Oilers and Hurricanes and to a lesser degree the Coyotes and Blue Jackets and while this Cinderella run could end at any moment and send the Sabres back to those ranks they are certainly thriving in the moment right now. Jhonas Enroth will likely take the night off after a successful stretch and give way for Michal Neuvirth who has struggled to a 3-6-1 record this season.
The Jets have been one of the league's biggest surprises this season as they sit in the Central division and while the failed to make up any ground in their last outing they have a great matchup here against the Sabres on home ice. Winnipeg is a very deep team that will only get better once their walking wounded return but for the time being the Jets have to continue to power forward and take advantage of spots like this where on paper the game should be a cakewalk. Despite winning four in a row and seven of their last 10 the Sabres are heavy underdogs in this spot which is usually attributed to the Jets playing at home but so far this season they are a modest 6-6-2 at the MTS Centre and it is their play on the road that has been their bread and butter. Nonetheless, Buffalo is in a tough spot as this is a back to back spot for them and while they were able to grab the two last night I don't see them getting any in this one.
