The NHL won’t be picking back up again until Saturday, so there are still a couple more days to wait until we can get our hockey fixes again. In the meantime, there’s plenty to go over as far as injuries and outlooks, so let’s check out some of the headlines happening out there right now.

We’ll have to wait until tomorrow before we can get an update on three key Penguins players who are undergoing medical testing.
RW Steve Downie, G Thomas Greiss and C Brandon Sutter have all gotten tests for the mumps, but due to the NHL’s break in the schedule, we won’t know the results of those tests until tomorrow when the Pens get back together for practice.
All three players have been out for the past two games (precautionary), and we’ll have to wait until tomorrow to see if they’ll miss more time.

Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos has experienced something of a statistical slowdown in December. In his last nine games, he has only four points (three goals; one assist). During that time, the Lightning have recorded a 3-5-1 record, which makes all kinds of sense.
In a similar situation, center Brian Boyle has just one point (goal) in the last 22 outings.
It’s certainly a slump for Stamkos, Boyle and thereby the entire Tampa offense, but we need a larger sample size before we can predict that the downturn will stick around.

The Rangers have won seven straight games, and some of that is due to Derek Stepan. He posted an assist in the team’s last game Tuesday, and now has points in the last four straight.
Stepan doesn’t get a whole lot of shots on goal each game, but he’s making the most of the talent around him by facilitating his teammates. He’ll need to continue doing that if the Rangers want to keep up their winning ways.

The Devils assigned C Tim Sestito to the AHL yesterday. That’s good news for New Jersey’s health, as we should see at least one forward returning on Saturday.
