The NHL’s annual Winter Classic is just a few hours away, and that’s part of a pair of games on the schedule for this opening day in the 2015 calendar. While we’re getting settled in, let’s take our daily look at some of the news-making players out there and see how things are going.

Ryan Strome, C, NY Islanders: The Isles started out a seven-game road trip (their longest of the season) yesterday, and got a nice opening win in Winnipeg. Strome posted four points on a goal and three assists in the 5-2 win at MTS Centre, while Frans Nielsen logged two goals and an assist of his own. Andrew Ladd scored twice in the losing effort.
The Isles are a comfortable 11-7-1 on the road this year, and a combined 28-12-3 in their last 43 road outings overall.

Ondrej Palat, LW, Tampa Bay Lightning: Speaking of four-point outings, Palat posted one himself last night. His came against the Sabres at First Niagara Center in a 5-1 victory for Tampa Bay. He’d finish with a goal and three assists.
Nikita Kucherov (two goals; assist) and Tyler Johnson (three assists) also had big nights for the Lightning.
The victory brings Tampa to 24-11-4 on the season and have won four straight games overall. The Sabres fall to 14-21-3.

Chris Kreider, LW, New York Rangers: The Rangers were able to bounce back after a loss to the Stars in their last outing by getting a nice win over the Panthers 5-2 last night. Kreider put up a goal and an assist, as did Ryan McDonagh.
The Rangers peppered Florida with shots all night, out-shooting the home team 34-20. The team is now 20-11-4 on the season while the Panthers fall to 16-10-9. It was Florida’s first regulation home loss in nine games.

Kari Lehtonen, G, Dallas Stars: Speaking of the aforementioned Stars, they were on point last night against the Coyotes. Lehtonen made saves on all 32 shots to post the third shutout of his season and 30th of his career in a 6-0 rout that put Dallas up to 17-14-5 on the year. The Stars have now won three straight and eight of their last 10 overall.
The loss stops a three-game win streak for the Coyotes, who fall to 14-19-5.
