Colorado Avalanche vs. Boston Bruins - 1/21/15 NHL Pick, Odds, and Prediction

The Bruins have turned things around after a mediocre start to the season and now with the second half of the schedule underway the B's are making a charge towards the postseason and currently hold down a wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. Boston has become synonymous with playoff hockey over the last 10 years or so and they seem to be in the mix every year so it was weird to see them in a place where their playoff status was uncertain but if they continue playing the way they are at the moment they should have no trouble at least securing a wild card spot if not chasing down the Bolts, Canadiens, or Red Wings for one of the automatic berths out of the Atlantic. Niklas Svedberg is expected to get the nod here as Tukka Rask went last night and he will go up against Semyon Varlamov who will aim to get the Avs back in the win column after a loss in their last outing.

The Avalanche have been a funny team this season but are right where they should be in terms of the talent level in the Western Conference and challenging for a playoff spot fits the bill with the talent on this roster. The Avs are coming off a spectacular season in which they shocked everyone and claimed the Central division banner but they have hit a harsh reality this season and they have some work to do before they can be considered among the league's elite again though they certainly have the pieces in place to do so. Colorado could end up being sellers at the trade deadline if they can't play their way into a postseason spot but they are only five points back of the second wild card spot and could very well turn things up a notch and get back into contention with a winning streak. I am a little overly optimistic with this group but the leadership is there and I think they pass a major test here against a tough Bruins team playing with their back up goalie.
