NHL Daily Updates: Checking in on the Latest News, Daily Schedule and More
January 25, 2015
Today marks the NHL’s All-Star Game, which will get going at 5:00 PM ET. In the meantime, there’s plenty to talk about as we cruise through the tail end of the weekend. Let’s check out some of the headlines out there while we’re waiting on the puck to drop.
We’ll start out this morning by checking out some of the winners from yesterday’s NHL All-Star Skills Competition. Here’s a closer look at the league’s elite.
USA TODAY Sports
The Blackhawks’ Patrick Kane won the Shooting Accuracy competition, needing just five shots to make it through four targets in 13.529 seconds.
Shea Weber of the Predators can boast the NHL’s hardest shot. He smacked the puck at an impressive 108.5 MPH, which is just 0.3 slower than Zdeno Chara’s 2012 record.
Jonathan Drouin from Tampa Bay can call himself the league’s fastest skater. He finished the competition in 13.103 for the win.
The Lightning’s Steven Stamkos is looking for a big deal at his next extension deadline, which will likely take place this summer. He can sign when July begins and will likely ink something in the neighborhood of Kane and Toews’ deals in Chicago. (eight years; $84 million).
Speaking of the Lightning, Tyler Johnson won’t be playing in today’s All-Star game due to a lower-body injury. This seems to be a precautionary measure and not something for fans to worry about in the long-term.
The Ducks’ Clayton Stoner is expected to be back on the ice this week. He should be available on Tuesday, according to the coaching staff. Stoner is getting over a lower-body injury he’s been fighting for about a week.
