January 31, 2015
After just five games in the NHL last night, we’re getting a heavy dose today with 11 games on the schedule. The action gets started early this afternoon, so make sure you reserve that spot on the couch. While we’re waiting on those pucks to drop, let’s check out today’s headlines and hot-topic players.
Simon Despres, D, Pittsburgh Penguins: Despite a sterling effort from Devils goalie Cory Schneider, the Penguins emerged victorious at Prudential Center in Newark yesterday.
Despres put up the game-winner in overtime, breaking a 1-1 tie and spoiling a 43-save effort by Schneider. Chris Kunitz scored the other goal for Pittsburgh.
The Penguins out-shot the Devils by a whopping 43-14 margin.

Semyon Varlamov, G, Colorado Avalanche: Over at Pepsi Center, the Avalanche got a solid victory over the Predators 3-0 last night in Denver. Varlamov posted his fourth shutout of the season on a 23-save effort.
The Avalanche are now 21-18-11 and have won four in a row at home. They’re now just two points behind the Flames for the second Wild Card spot in the conference.
Chris Higgins, LW, Vancouver Canucks: Ryan Miller bagged 20 saves against his former team the Sabres last night and Vancouver posted a rare strong offensive effort in a 5-2 win. Higgins put up a goal and an assist in the victory. The score ended an 11-game drought for him.
Buffalo fell to 0-12-0 in January, which is a franchise record for futility in a month.
Patrick Kane, RW, Chicago Blackhawks: The Blackhawks put up a dominant effort in Anaheim against the Ducks last night, finishing with a 4-1 victory at Honda Center. Kane had two goals and an assist, while teammate Patrick Sharp managed a whopping four assists.
That win brings Chicago to 31-16-2 on the year and is the second victory of their seven-game trip.
As for the Ducks, they slide to 32-12-6 and have lost their last two games in regulation.
