The Stars look to distance themselves in the race for a Western Conference wild card spot as they take on one of the teams they're fighting with in the Colorado Avalanche in Dallas on Tuesday night.

The Avalanche have been one of the tougher teams in the league to figure out this season as they were projected to battle for the top seed in the Western Conference after a breakout season last year but at this point they are fighting just to stay above .500 and at the moment are on the outside looking in when it comes to the NHL playoffs. Colorado is a good team but didn't deserve the praise coming into the year as last season was a bit of a fluke in mu opinion and while that has helped us out a lot this year in terms of the value we are getting on them as underdogs it may not translate into a playoff berth as the West is ridiculously competitive. Colorado does have a lot of talent though especially in the offensive zone and have a nice balance of youth and veteran leadership plus they have Semyon Varlamov who is coming off a Vezina caliber season.
Dallas meanwhile sits in a very similar position to the Avalanche as they too were predicted to be in the playoff mix this season after acquiring Jason Spezza and Ales Hemsky but the moves haven't paid off as planned and as such the Stars sit on the outside looking in as well. However, a second half surge has the Stars on the move as they're just four points back of Calgary for the final wild card spot in the West and have a full two months to get caught up so if they can keep rolling they could very well sneak into the playoffs and knock off one of the teams who has been there all season long including Calgary, Winnipeg, or Los Angeles. The Stars need to take advantage of games on home ice and while they are pretty heavily favoured here I am not buying into it completely. Dallas has burned us a few times in these spots and the Avs are getting overlooked once again as these rosters are very close and the teams are tied for points. I love the value here on Colorado and they're worth a shot.
