The Edmonton Oilers have had another long and disappointing season and have picked an inopportune time to start winning hockey games as they're playing their way out of the top two spots in next year's draft which could yield a generational talent in the form of Connor McDavid and Jack Eichel. The Oilers were projected to make some noise this season and perhaps end their long playoff drought but instead they are in the midst of another losing season and will be hard pressed to finish outside the basement the Western Conference but the team and their fans would gladly take a late season run in hopes of a move in the right direction. Ben Scrivens was brilliant between the pipes last night but we will likely see Viktor Fasth go tonight and he too has been playing much better of late but they see a tough squad here in the form of the New York Islanders.
The Isles have been one of the league's top teams this season and while their hold on top spot in the Metro division has fluctuated over the last two weeks and they are only at 5-5 in their last 10 contests the likelihood of a postseason berth is well within the realm of possibility. New York will look to take their frustrations out on the Oilers in this one but they'll have to do so without Kyle Okposo who remains sidelined and the team is certainly missing his presence as he was one of the team leaders both on and off the ice and they haven't been able to fill his void. New York has been very good at home this season sporting a 17-6 record while the Oilers have been a train wreck on the road and while they got the win last night I don't expect them to follow suit as New York should get the win with relative ease.
