The Washington Capitals have made some serious strides forward this season and have done so under the new guidance of Barry Trotz who has transformed this group in his first season with the team and has them playing a team game rarely seen from this group in many years. The Caps brought in some pieces on the blue line, have a well balanced attack, have the superstar presence, and a great goaltender which all adds up to a deep team that could go on a deep playoff run. Washington is 5-3-2 in their 10 games are coming off a victory against the San Jose Sharks but they know full well that the defending champs will be itching for a victory as they battle for a playoff spot and as winners of three in a row they are starting to make up some ground in the Western Conference. Braden Holtby will get the call in the crease as he will go up against Jonathan Quick.
The Kings are starting to turn things around and are aiming for their fourth in a row but heading into action tonioght they still sit three points out of a wild card spot and unless they make some changes at the deadline they could very well miss out on the opportunity to defend their title. Los Angeles is still a very deep team but the off ice issues of Slava Voynov that has resulted in an indefinite suspension and the on ice productivity of Mike Richards that forced the team to cut him has left a sour taste in the mouth of this Kings group and how they respond could go a long way in determining their playoff fate. LA is getting the benefit of the doubt here and rightfully so as they have been ridiculous at home and while I have been a huge supporter of Holtby and the Caps this season I think this is a good spot for LA and they need to keep rolling to stay in the mix.
