Heading into the off season the Dallas Stars know that they need to find a way to upgrade their defensive group.

This is a club that has proven they have the offensive talent to compete in the Western Conference, and Kari Lehtonen still might be a capable goaltender with a legitimate group of defensive behind him.

It’s too little, too late for the Stars but their recent play has almost catapulted them back into the playoff race as they’re currently just five points behind the Calgary Flames in the Pacific Division standings. With just eight games remaining that’s a fairly significant point total to overcome, but it’s not entirely insurmountable.

Dallas managed to take two points from the Flames on Wednesday night, but they weren’t able to prevent the Flames from getting one. Dallas blew a 2-0 and 3-2 lead in this game before finally securing the extra point in the shootout.

Ales Hemsky scored his 10th goal of the season in the first minute of the second period and Jamie Benn made it 2-0 with his 27th goal of the season. After Calgary rallied to tie the game, Dallas regained the lead with 16 seconds remaining in middle frame on Hemsky’s second of the night and 11th of the season.

The Flames scored the only goal in the third period to even the score and after a scoreless overtime period it was Tyler Seguin who scored the only goal in the shootout to lift the Stars to the victory.

Dallas is one of the hottest teams in the league right now and with games against Vancouver and Calgary coming up after Friday night’s match up in Edmonton, the club has a realistic chance of really being in this race going into the last week of the season.

Their opponent on Friday, the Edmonton Oilers, have not had the amount of success that the Stars have had recently, but three wins in their last five games is about as good as it gets if you’re a fan of the Oilers.

Wednesday night against Colorado the Oilers looked like they were going to cruise to an easy victory after the first period, but in classic Edmonton fashion were forced to rally for a win after blowing the lead.

Martin Marincin opened the scoring with his first goal of the year in the first period, and Jordan Eberle and Taylor Hall also added goals to give Edmonton a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.

Colorado would score twice in the second period and got the equalizer early in the third, but Edmonton would get a power play goal from Derek Roy midway through the frame and hold on for a 4-3 win.

Dallas is a road favorite in this one and rightfully so with the way they’ve played recently. The Stars should be able to expose this Edmonton defense, and if they even play a little bit of defense should find a way to pick up another crucial win on Friday night.
