The New York Rangers look to move closer to an Eastern Conference title and the President’s Trophy when they take on the red hot Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday night.
After a brief slip up with three losses in four games the Rangers have rebounded to win three straight. At 107 points they control their own destiny as they look to secure the No. 1 overall seed in the league heading into the post season.

Saturday night the Rangers hosted the New Jersey Devils at Madison Square Garden, and despite not playing a great game overall they converted on their chances when they got them. Rick Nash opened the scoring with his 42nd goal of the year to put New York up 1-0. Five shots later it was 3-0 after Keith Yandle and Dominic Moore scored.
New York would score short handed when Derek Stepan beat Keith Kinkaid through the legs with just seconds remaining in the second period. In the third the Rangers got goals from Derick Brassard and Moore as they cruised to a 6-1 victory.
The lone blemish against Henrik Lundqvist came late in the game off a deflection, but aside from that it looked like Lundqvist was at the top of his game. Head coach Alain Vigneault said that Lundqvist would play Monday night against Columbus, but look for Cam Talbot to get one more start on Tuesday in New Jersey.
Now the Rangers are going to have to find a way to up their play as they take on a Columbus blue that has been one of the better teams in the league. The Blue Jackets have won nine straight coming into this contest and that includes victories over teams like Anaheim, Chicago, and St. Louis.
Saturday afternoon it looked like the Blue Jackets were in danger of snapping that winning streak when they fell behind by two goals against a Pittsburgh Penguins club desperate for points. Nick Foligno got them on the board late in the second period to cut the lead to one, and just over two minutes later Matt Calvert tied the game with his 11th of the year.
In the third period Foligno gave the Blue Jackets the lead and Scott Hartnell added his 26th goal of the season as the Blue Jackets were on their way to a 5-3 win. Foligno finished off the hat trick with his 30th goal of the season coming into the empty net. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 33 shots in the win.
New York is one of the best teams in the league but we’re seeing just how good Columbus could have been had it not been for all the injuries they’ve suffered this season. This should be a highly entertaining game between two clubs that can really generate offense.
