Today’s the day. The 2015 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs begin this evening, so there’s no turning back now. Before we settle in and check out the games, let’s visit the headlines and see what’s happening out there.

The Capitals’ Tom Wilson is reportedly “very close” to a return to the ice. That doesn’t necessarily mean that he’ll be 100 percent for tonight’s opener against the Islanders, but he shouldn’t be out with that head injury too much longer.

Penguins defenseman Derrick Pouliot missed out on practice yesterday due to an upper-body injury.
We’ll probably have more details on his status at some point today, but for now we’d call him questionable for tomorrow’s game.

Travis Hamonic is most likely going to miss out on tonight’s opener against the Capitals, according to sources close to the team.
Hamonic’s issue is undisclosed at this point, and we’ve got no timetable on his return to the ice. He last played on April 10.

In more positive news, the Blackhawks’ Patrick Kane is set to suit up for tonight’s game against the Predators.
Kane just got full clearance on Monday, and is coming back from a clavicle break. He last took the ice on February 24.

Let’s finish up today with a couple of Rangers items: first, defenseman Marc Staal practiced yesterday, which is a good sign in his return from that undisclosed injury. He missed out on the Rangers’ final two regular season games.
Rick Nash also practiced yesterday. He’s got an undisclosed issue as well.
Kevin Klein, however, had to sit out yesterday’s practice session. He hasn’t been out on the ice since March 11, so it’s a good bet he won’t be suiting up tomorrow.
