The Verizon Center and the Washington Capitals host the New York Islanders in an opening round contest.
If you follow the New York Islanders you know they have made a huge turnaround from previous seasons although the magic seemed to be wearing off towards the end of the year where the team dropped six of nine heading in to the postseason. The Islanders were a score first squad and their numbers say as much with a three goal average to rank 4th while allowing 2.7 goals which was #23 in the league. Center John Tavares was fabulous at the offensive end with 86 points including 39 goals. Jaroslav Halak was virtually the only goaltender with 59 games where he was 38-21 with a 2.43 goals against average average with six shutouts and a .914 save percentage.

The Washington Capitals finished second in the Metropolitan behind the Rangers behind one of the top offenses in the league. The potent Capitals attack was number seven in the game at 2.9 goals while the team also was none too shabby defensively with 2.4 goals allowed which was also number seven so we are talking about a team that could perform effectively at both ends of the ice. Alex Ovechkin did as he usually does and tat’s put up some big offensive numbers with 81 points with 21 goals. Nicklas Backstrom recorded 78 points with 60 assists to give the Caps a potent one, two threat at the offensive end. The Capitals relied on Braden Holtby in goal who appeared in 73 games with a 41-30 record with a 2.22 GAA with a nifty nine shutouts.
The Islanders are 4-0 in their last 4 Wednesday games with the under going 4-0 in Islanders last 4 after allowing 5 goals or more in their previous game and the over hitting at 4-1 in Islanders last 5 Conference Quarterfinals games. The over is 3-0-1 in Capitals last 4 vs. Metropolitan while the Capitals are 4-0 in their last 4 after scoring 2 goals or less in their previous game and 0-4 in their last 4 home games vs. a team with a winning road record. Heads to head the home team is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings while the Islanders are 1-4 in the last 5 meetings in Washington and the under is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings in Washington. Just going with the better odds for now as I dig deeper so check back Wednesday…
