The Tampa Bay Lightning welcome the Detroit Red Wings to Amalie Arena to open the postseason.
The Detroit Red Wings weren’t exactly setting the world fire to end the year and there was a stretch where this team was in the habit of blowing late leads. Overall I see a team that won’t outscore opponents and won’t shut down the opposition and simply need both ends of the ice to play well to have the best chance of success. The Red Wings averaged 2.8 goals on 29.6 shots for 10th in the league while their 2.6 goals allowed was a mediocre #15. Henrik Zetterberg led the team with 66 points but the nucleus of this offense were centers Pavel Datsyuk, Tomas Tater and Gustav Nyqvist who combined for 82 goals. Jimmy Howard posted a 2.44 goals against average in 53 games while Petr Mrazek owned a 2.38 GAA in 29 contests.

The Tampa Bay Lightning came within a few points of unseating Montreal for supremacy in the Atlantic division with both teams reaching the 50 win plateau so a few goals here or there made a huge difference in the 82 game schedule. The Lightning closed the year with three straight victories and look to get their potent offense going that was the best in the game at 3.2 goals per contest. Combined with the #12 defense that allowed 2.5 goals and this team could win big when performing well at both ends of the ice. Steven Stamkos was the team’s top gun with 43 goals but he had plenty of company with Tyler Johnson and Nikita Kucherov scoring 29 times apiece. Ben Bishop was the workhorse in goal with a 40-18 record and 2.32 GAA.
The under is 4-0 in Red Wings last 4 games playing on 3 or more days rest and 1-0-3 in Red Wings last 4 after scoring 2 goals or less in their previous game while the Red Wings are 0-7 in their last 7 games following a win. The under is 3-0-1 in Lightning last 4 vs. Atlantic and the over is 3-0-2 in Lightning last 5 home games while Tampa Bay are 5-0 in their last 5 after allowing 2 goals or less in their previous game. Head to head the Red Wings are 0-4 in the last 4 meetings in Tampa Bay with the home team going 5-1 in the last 6 meetings while Detroit are 2-7 in the last 9 meetings. I’m not a Detroit fan but the odds say maybe a small play at most…
