The New York Islanders sure didn't show any rust in their playoff debut this season as they went into the Verizon Center and left with home ice advantage and a 1-0 series lead in what was a perfectly played game for them. New York got off to an early lead and didn't look back as they were never really threatened by the Caps who once again have demonstrated they don't have what it takes to perform on the big stage but they'll get another crack at it tonight. The Isles hadn't been playing their best hockey coming into the series but with John Tavares up front it would come as no surprise to see him take over this series and these playoffs and lead the Isles to a modest first round upset and perhaps take a bigger swing at their cross town rivals pending they get through the Penguins.
The Capitals face a must win situation a lot earlier than expected heading into Friday's game two against the Isles as they dropped the series opener 4-1 on Wednesday and if they're going to get the win they need to break out offensively and get a better game from Braden Holtby. Washington was a trendy pick coming into the series and while it is still more than possible they take four straight here I think many were expecting the Caps to come out firing in game one and force the Isles to play their way back into the series once they are at home. However, the Islanders have already done their part and taken home ice advantage and if they can get another here it would be gravy but you can bet the Caps will be in desperation mode tonight. Washington needs this one and I think they reply.
