The Washington Capitals pay a visit Long Island for game three with the New York Islanders Sunday.

The New York Islanders appeared as if they were going to bring a 2-0 series lead home with them but those hopes were never realized after Washington evened their series 1-1 with a 4-3 victory Friday night. The Islanders seemed to be in control with 2-0 and 3-1 leads but as I always say this is a 60 minute game and strange things happen in the postseason. New York received goals from Ryan Strome, Cal Clutterback and Kyle Okposo while the loss went to Jaroslav Halak who recorded 31 stops but couldn’t hold off a Capitals assault that netted a pair of goals in the second and two more in the third.

New York Islanders vs. Washington Capitals - 4/19/15 NHL Pick, Odds, and Prediction

The Washington Capitals appeared to have their backs against the wall before the opening faceoff when starting goalie Braden Holtby couldn’t play because of illness. In his stead the Capitals called up Phillipp Grubauer of the American Hockey League and the rookie made his debut a winner with 18 saves. Of course it wasn’t easy as the Caps played from behind most of the night and had to rally from a pair of two goal deficits. Jason Chimera scored the eventual winner in the third period with Karl Alzner, Alex Ovechkin and Niklas Backstrom also lighting the lamp while Backstrom also added a pair of helpers. Backstrom’s performance was a plus considering he hadn’t since the third week in February.

Washington was dominated in the opener by a 4-1 count and appeared to be heading for the same fate in game two before  the offense finally showed some life. Going forward the we have seen New York being able to do some scoring and that can’t happen on their home ice because I don’t think they’ll cough up a lead there. The bottom line is Washington has to find a way to keep the puck out of their own net because the Isles will be putting on the pressure. No line is out and I don’t know the Caps situation in the nets so please check back…
