The New York Islanders need a win on home ice against the Washington Capitals to stay alive in the postseason.
The New York Islanders entered their series with Washington as the team to beat in the eyes of many but the Capitals are one game away from advancing to the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Islanders suffered across the board breakdowns at both ends of the ice in a 5-1 defeat at the hands of the Capitals on Thursday night. The highlight for the Isles came in the opening period when Josh Bailey scored the lone goal. Jaroslav Halak was given the hook in the third with five goals let in on 35 shots with Michal Neuvirth stopping six shots the rest of the way. My take is why did the change not happen sooner before the game was completely out of reach.

The Washington Capitals are a game away from eliminating the Islanders whom they will face Saturday in game six of their series. The Capitals were dominant in every area as the big scoring offense of New York was held in check while the Caps fired shot after shot at Jaroslav Halak who eventually folded in a three goal third. Evgeny Kuznetsov paced the scoring parade with a pair of tallies and an assist while Brooks Laich, Karl Alzner and Jason Chimera also lit the lamp with Alzner and Chimera posting helpers with Jay Beagle and Marcus Johansson adding two assists as well. The defense kept the puck away from the net with Braden Holtby recording just 22 shots to get the win.
The Capitals are 0-4 in their last 4 Saturday games with the under going 8-1 in Capitals last 9 after scoring 5 goals or more in their previous game while Washington are 5-1 in their last 6 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600. The under is 4-0 in Islanders last 4 after allowing 5 goals or more in their previous game and the over is 5-1 in Islanders last 6 when their opponent allows 2 goals or less in their previous game while New YorkIslanders are 3-13 in their last 16 when their opponent allows 2 goals or less in their previous game. The home team is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings and the Capitals are 22-10 in the last 32 meetings. I’m waiting on goalie confirmation especially for New York so please check back…
