The Calgary Flames pulled off an impressive series victory over the higher seeded Vancouver Canucks in what was the toughest first round series to forecast and their reward is a date with the high powered Anaheim Ducks who have dominated the Flames in Anaheim for years. Calgary was a team at the beginning of the season expected to be in the mix for the Connor McDavid sweepstakes but instead they have developed their own young phenoms into league powers as the likes of Sean Monahan, Johnny Gaudreau, and Sam Bennett were all vital to Calgary's win against Vancouver and will be leaned on heavily in this spot against a very deep and physical Anaheim side.
The Ducks were the only team to sweep the opposition in the first round as they fought back from three third period deficits to win four straight against the Winnipeg Jets and now they match up with Calgary who also plays a strong third frame in what is surely going to be exciting hockey all the way until the buzzer. Anaheim has four lines solid and are one of the deepest teams left in the field but their goal differential during the regular season and their lack luster blue line is a cause for concern and while they may be OK in this series with Calgary I don't see them as a Cup contender at this point. Anaheim will have some familiarity as well as long time former goaltender Jonas Hiller will be 200 feet down the ice competing for his new team and it remains to be seen whether that will help or hinder the Ducks as the revenge factor sometimes is very potent. As for game one, the Ducks should have the legs here to make a statement and I think they extend Calgary’s poor road effort here tonight.
