Today’s the day. The 2015 NHL Stanley Cup Finals begin tonight, and the anticipation is running high. Before we jump into the big game, let’s check out some of the notable players and situations out there in the league.

This week, the Rangers and Lightning made a minor trade that could have big implications down the road. New York swapped Daniel Walcott in exchange for a seventh-round pick in this year’s NHL Entry Draft.
Walcott--who is a defenseman--posted 41 points in 54 games during the regular season with QMJHL. He’ll join up with a very promising crop of talent in the Tampa Bay stable.

Speaking of the Rangers, let’s get into a couple of injury issues for them.
Defenseman Ryan McDonagh is currently wearing a walking boot and getting around on crutches thanks to a broken foot sustained in the Lightning series. He’ll be in the boot for four weeks before getting a re-evaluation from the doctors. If everything proceeds as planned, he should be okay for the start of training camp.
Also, the Rangers’ Mackenzie Skapski underwent an arthroscopic surgical procedure yesterday on his hip. The surgery was intended to repair a labral tear on his right side.
Skapski will be out of action for around four or five months. The young net-minder made two very memorable appearances with the big club, but otherwise logged a 2.40 GAA with a .914 save percentage with AHL Hartford.

Good news for the Penguins’ Pascal Dupuis. He’s reportedly free of the blood clots that derailed his 2014-15 season.
That aside, Dupuis isn’t out of the medical woods yet. We’ll have to wait for a more specific analysis of his current condition before speculating on his future with the Penguins and in the NHL in general.
