The San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings open the regular season Wednesday at the Staples Center.
The San Jose Sharks hope to return to the playoffs after coming up short last year and bringing in a new coach in Peter DeBoer. The San Jose Sharks finished last season ranked 15th with an average of 2.7 goals per game. Joe Pavelski returns after leading San Jose with 37 goals, Logan Couture had 40 assists and Patrick Marleau had 233 shots on goal. Defensively, the Sharks ranked 24th in the league with an average of 2.8 goals allowed per game. Martin Jones and Alex Stalock will take over as the goaltenders this season for San Jose. Raffi Torres is questionable and Melker Karlsson is doubtful.

The Los Angeles Kings hope to rebound after missing the playoffs last year for the first time since 2008. The Los Angeles Kings ranked 18th last season with an average of 2.7 goals per game. Jeff Carter returns after leading Los Angeles with 28 goals, Marian Gaborik had 20 assists and Tyler Toffoli had 200 shots on goal. Defensively, the Kings ranked fourth last season with an average of 2.4 goals allowed per game. Jonathan Quick and Jhonas Enroth will be Los Angeles’ goalies this season. Matt Greene is questionable with an upper-body injury.
The Sharks are 25-10 in their last 35 games playing on 3 or more days rest. The Kings are 4-1 in their last 5 home games and 3-7 in their last 10 vs. Western Conference. The Sharks are 3-14 in the last 17 meetings in Los Angeles and 2-7 in the last 9 meetings overall.
It's no secret, the Kings usually dominate the Sharks, especially when playing in Los Angeles. The Kings also have to be hungry after missing the playoffs last year when they won the Cup in 2013. I think it's the Kings that bounce back with a nice season opener victory on their home ice.
