The NHL has had just five games over the past two days, but we’ll be getting double that amount this evening as we return to action. In the meantime, let’s take our daily look at some of the key players out there.
Ryan Strome, C, NY Islanders: The Isles got a nice 5-3 win over the Avalanche last night at Barclays Center, getting offensive contributions from several players.
Strome had a goal and an assist; the score was his sixth of the year so far.
The Islanders are 13-8-4 on the season and rolling right now with a 3-0-1 record in their past four. They’re 9-2-1 against Western Conference teams and will play the Rangers tomorrow.

Derick Brassard, C, New York Rangers: Speaking of the Rangers, they played last night as well, putting an end to their three-game losing streak with a 4-3 win over the Hurricanes at Madison Square Garden.
Brassard scored and had an assist here, with Henrik Lundqvist making 33 saves for his 13th win overall.
New York had a 4-1 lead here, but were able to hang on to move to 17-6-2.
Garret Sparks, G, Toronto Maple Leafs: Sparks tallied the first of two shutouts in last night’s games, making saves on all 24 shots in a 3-0 win over the Oilers at Air Canada Centre. He was the first goaltender in Leafs history to earn a shutout in his NHL debut.
James Van Riemsdyk had a nice game with three assists, and Leo Kamarov posted a pair of goals on three shots.
Toronto ends a three-game losing streak and moves to 8-11-5 on the season.
John Gibson, G, Anaheim Ducks: Not to be outdone, Gibson earned his third career shutout last night, making saves on all 25 o the Canucks’ shots in a 4-0 win at Honda Center.
Rickard Rakell, Jakob Silfverberg, Corey Perry and Shawn Horcoff all scored for the Ducks. Nick Ritchie posted his first NHL point with an assist on the Silfverberg goal.
