The Flames look to shake off an ugly loss at home against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night as they head into Philadelphia to face off against the Flyers.
The Calgary Flames have taken a hit this season after exceeding expectations a year ago and qualifying for the playoffs and unfortunately for them they haven’t been able to produce a follow up and heading into tonight’s game they sit 12 points back of a wild card spot. The Flames have a young core and will be a very good team for many years to come and with a potential top five draft pick coming up this offseason they can add another solid piece and make that potential even brighter. However, they do need to make a serious upgrade between the pipes as the move to get Jonas Hiller hasn’t worked out as planned and with Joni Ortio handling the duties right now they are on autofade.

The Flyers meanwhile remain in the race for a playoff spot as they have really turned their season around and are just three points back of the Penguins for the second and final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. Philadelphia has their issues as does every team and while many predicted they would fall short of this year’s playoffs they have as good a chance as any in the handful of teams in the running for a wild card spot and if they can get in they have the offensive fire power to compete and a goalie in Steve Mason who has shown before that he can carry a team on his back. The Flyers are at home in this spot which makes them even more of a confident pick and while I wish the juice was lighter I think they are well worth it here against a struggling Flames side.
