The Islanders look for their second win in as many nights as they head into the ACC to battle the Maple Leafs on Wednesday.
The New York Islanders withstood a late onslaught from the Pittsburgh Penguins on home ice last night and held on for a pivotal 2-1 victory as they moved five points clear of the Pens for third in the Metro and pulled to within three points of the Rangers for second with three games in hand. The Isles have quietly pieced together a very strong campaign as they sit 37-20-7 on the year and backup goaltender Thomas Greiss, who came in in relief with four minutes to play after Jaroslav Halak went down with an injury, has a very impressive 18-6-3 record with a 2.21 goals against average. Greiss was likely to get the call in this one anyways but with Halak likely out for a couple of days at least we can pretty well guarantee that Greiss will get the nod as he will face off against Garret Sparks for the Buds.

Toronto meanwhile continues to play out the string in what has been a very disappointing season, but one that came with expectations of futility and the start of a full rebuild. The Buds are the leaders in the Auston Matthews sweepstakes but as we saw last year it is no certainty that the league’s worst team will get the top overall draft pick and that is why Connor McDavid is in Edmonton and not Buffalo. The Leafs have struggled mightily of late as they are just 1-7-2 in their last 10 overall and have just 21 victories in 65 contests this season for a league low 53 points. The Leafs will look to play spoiler here but the Islanders always play well in Toronto and even more so here as they coast to a multi goal victory.
