The Devils look to keep their faint playoff hopes intact as they host the league leading Capitals on Friday night.
The Washington Capitals head into New Jersey on Friday night looking to distance themselves from the pack in the race for the President’s Trophy but with just 10 games remaining before the end of the regular season and a pretty comfortable lead I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Caps rest some key pieces in the coming week. The Capitals have been the class of the Eastern Conference all season long and they have already clinched top seed and home ice throughout the playoffs but that doesn’t mean they will take any of their opponents lightly down the stretch as they know players are auditioning for contracts and teams are fighting to get into the playoffs. The Caps are likely to go with Braden Holtby in this one as he will face off against Scott Wedgewood who is expected to get the call in the New Jersey crease.

The Devils got a huge win against the Pittsburgh Penguins last night and kept their fading playoff hopes alive for another day, but if they fall in this one against the Caps they may be too far removed from the race for one of the two wild card spots. New Jersey has overachieved a bit this season and while Cory Schneider is one of the better goaltenders in the NHL the Devils don’t have a ton of help in front of him and until they can add a piece or two they are going to stay in this limbo phase on the cusp of getting into the playoffs. New Jersey got a big time win last night but I don’t see a repeat effort, especially if Wedgewood gets the call as the Caps cruise to a regulation victory.
