The NHL’s schedule last night was thin, but there’s a lot to talk about this morning ahead of today’s enormous slate. Before we settle in, let’s check in on some of the notable players and stats from the headlines.
Brian Elliott, G, St. Louis Blues: Last night at Scottrade Center, the Blues took care of business against the visiting Canucks last night, taking a smooth 4-0 win.
Elliott didn’t have to do much to pitch the shutout, logging 15 saves on 15 shots. The Blues, by comparison, had a whopping 37 shots on goal. They scored twice in the first period.
The Blues have 97 points now, with a 44-22-9 record. The Canucks have 67 points at 27-34-13.

Ondrej Palat, LW, Tampa Bay Lightning: If you like high-scoring hockey, this Lightning-Isles game was for you. Palat posted three assists here, helping the team to a 7-4 victory at Amalie Arena.
This game was tied 3-3 after two periods, then Tampa exploded with four goals in the final frame.
The Lightning are 43-26-5 with 91 points; the Isles are stuck at 87 points with a 39-25-9 record.
John Carlson, D, Washington Capitals: Carlson got to play the hero last night at Prudential Center, scoring the game-winning goal in overtime to take a 1-0 victory over the Devils.
Braden Holtby got the better of this goalie battle, posting 22 saves. Scott Wedgewood took the hard-luck loss on 25 saves.
The Caps are 53-15-5 with 111 points; the Devils have 80 points at 36-31-8.
