The 2016 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs are officially off and running, and we’ve got four more games to look forward to this evening. That said, let’s check out some of the notable players and stats in the headlines.

David Backes, C, St. Louis Blues: In what could be one of the best series of this year’s playoffs, the Blues struck first in Game 1 last night against the defending champion Blackhawks, snagging a tense 1-0 overtime victory.
Backes scored the game-winner in the extra period, while Brian Elliott put up 35 saves in the shutout. The decisive shot deflected off a Blackhawks defenseman and was characterized by Backes after the game as an “ugly goal.”
St. Louis came into the postseason on a roll, winning eight of their final 10 down the stretch.

Jeff Zatkoff, G, Pittsburgh Penguins: Filling in for injured goalie Marc-Andre Fleury last night (concussion), Zatkoff stood tall and helped the Penguins to a big opening-game win. He stopped 35 shots on 37 attempts in the 5-2 Pittsburgh victory, and on the offensive side got plenty of help.
Patric Hornqvist logged a hat trick and an assist, while Sidney Crosby put up a goal and two helpers of his own.
Meanwhile, the Rangers’ Henriq Lundqvist went out after the first period. He was poked in the eye by a teammate’s stick. He’ll be reevaluated today. Antti Raanta wasn’t great in relief, with three goals on 19 shots.

Nikita Kucherov, RW, Tampa Bay Lightning: Down at Amalie Arena in Tampa Bay, the Lightning and Red Wings played to a tight 3-2 Tampa victory. The home team scored once in each period here, with Kucherov providing two goals and assisting on the other.
Alex Killorn posted the other goal and had an assist to his credit.
The Red Wings outshot the Lightning 36-34 but didn’t see too many quality scoring chances. Game 2 of this series is tomorrow.
