The Islanders look to steal both games of their opening round series in Florida against the Panthers and head home with a commanding lead on Friday night.
The New York Islanders came out swinging on Thursday night and landed the final blow against the home town Florida Panthers as they have taken home ice advantage with a game one victory in which they netted five goals. The Isles backed their way into the playoffs but certainly looked like a contender last night, at least in the offensive zone as they pasted Roberto Luongo and the Florida defense and while they conceded four goals of their own they had enough resolve to hang on for the win and get a chance to take the first two less than 24 hours later. Thomas Greiss will stay in the New York crease as he will face off once again with Luongo who will be out for a better performance in this one.

The Panthers are looking for their first playoff series win since their run to the Cup final in 1996 and things didn’t get off on the right foot for the Atlantic division champions as they dropped a 5-4 nailbiter. Florida needs to do a better job in the defensive zone at containing John Tavares and while that is easier said than done they have the horses to do it as Aaron Ekblad has already emerged as a shut down defender in this league and his play will be key for the Cats moving forward. Florida needs ro get a win here and while New York couldn’t have asked for a better start I think the Panthers took some momentum back at the end of the game and they pull even tonight.
