The Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals kick off their highly anticipated Eastern Conference semi-final series at the Verizon Center on Thursday night.
The Penguins face off against their arch rivals in the Metro division championship after ridding of the New York Rangers in five games in the first round and as fans of the game there are so many people excited to see another playoff rendition of Crosby versus Ovechkin. The Penguins looked unstoppable in the first round as they made quick work of a talented New York Rangers side and have their sights sets on the Eastern Conference final but they run into the league’s best team and will not have home ice advantage in this round which certainly played a factor for them in the first round. Pittsburgh will likely stay with Matthew Murray in the crease until Marc-Andre Fleury is 100% and he will face off against Braden Holtby, who was recently named a finalist for this year’s Vezina Trophy.
The Capitals meanwhile had to play a few extra games than they had anticipated in the opening round as they locked up the series in six games on the road after spotting the Flyers a pair of wins that brought the series to 3-2. Washington has been stellar all season long and certainly have the makeup of a Stanley Cup winner but as we have seen in the past hey are susceptible to a playoff let down and they have yet to qualify beyond the second round in the Alex Ovechkin era, let alone qualify for the Cup final. However, the Caps are the favourite to emerge out of this series and while the value here is on the Pens I think Washington gets it done in game one as they have the edge in goal, are playing at home, and have a handful of former Penguins players looking to make a statement.
