The San Jose Sharks host the Pittsburgh Penguins in game three of the Stanley Cup finals.
The Pittsburgh Penguins got exactly what they wanted with a 2-1, overtime victory versus San Jose at the Consol Energy Center to maintain the home ice advantage and more importantly, take a 2-0 series lead. In contrast the Sharks face an almost must Saturday in order to avoid an ominous 0-3 hole.
USA TODAY Sports
Conor Sheary was the Penguins offensive star when he tallied the game winner just 2:35 in to the extra session to send the Consol Energy crowd in to a wild celebration. Phil Kessel gave the Pens a 1-0 lead in the second with Carl Hagelin and Nick Bonino logging assists while the Sharks sent the game to overtime when Justin Braun rattled one home off the right post with just 4:05 remaining in regulation.
Martin Jones played another strong game for San Jose with a 28 save effort while Matthew Murray was outstanding once again with 21 stops to pick up his second victory in the finals. Defense and goaltending have been key in the first two games with both squads combining for eight goals although Jones has seen plenty of rubber.
The under is 4-0 in Penguins last 4 Stanley Cup Finals games and the Penguins are 6-1 in their last 7 vs. Western Conference while going 5-1 in their last 6 Stanley Cup Finals games. The under is 4-0-1 in Sharks last 5 games playing on 2 days rest and the Sharks are 4-0 in their last 4 vs. a team with a winning % above .600 while going 8-1 in their last 9 games playing on 2 days rest. The Penguins are 1-10 in the last 11 meetings in San Jose and the under is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings while the home team is 13-4 in the last 17 meetings.
No line is out so please check back but I suspect San Jose will be smallish favorites.
