The New York Islanders open the season against archrival the New York Rangers on Thursday.
Head coach Jack Capuano has a lot of talent on the New York Islanders and the hope is a Stanley Cup is in their not so distant future. The Islanders were 45-27-10 last season but were booted from the postseason in the second round. The Isles were above average in the scoring department with 232 goals but were around the middle in goals allowed with 216. This team is known for John Tavares who will light up the scoreboard and give problems to any opponent of the NYI. The question for the Islanders is getting their star help Brock Nelson and Anders Lee have shown scoring potential. Jaroslav Halak needs to have a solid year in goal and the defense has to keep the puck off the net.

The New York Rangers are a certain playoff team but it was disappointing to lose to the Penguins 4-1 in the opening round. The Rangers posses a top ten offense that scored 236 goals but were middle of the row with 217 allowed. The NYR aren’t the youngest team in the league but that doesn’t mean they lack talent with Rick Nash, Chris Kreider, Derek Stepan, Ryan McDonagh and Marc Staal a few of the bigger names. Of course, the face of the Rangers is between the pipes in Henrik Lundqvist who had a 2.48 GAA but wasn’t the brick wall many seem to expect from him each night.
The Islanders are 0-4 in their last 4 vs. Eastern Conference and the Islanders are 4-0 in their last 4 games playing on 3 or more days rest while the Islanders are 0-4 in their last 4 overall. The Rangers are 0-7 in their last 7 games playing on 3 or more days rest and the over is 2-0-3 in Rangers last 5 Thursday games while the over is 4-0-2 in Rangers last 6 games playing on 3 or more days rest. The Islanders are 4-0 in the last 4 meetings in New York and the Islanders are 4-0 in the last 4 meetings while the road team is 13-4 in the last 17 meetings.
The trends seem to favor the Islanders but on opening I see the Rangers being more up to the task.
