The Detroit Red Wings and Tampa Bay Lightning open the 2016-17 NHL season Thursday night at the Amalie Arena.
The Detroit Red Wings have been the model of consistency in American sports after making the playoffs 25 straight seasons. Even without Pavel Datsyuk no longer on the roster for the first time in over a decade, the Red Wings have to like their chances to return to the postseason. The additions of Thomas Vanek, Frans Nielsen and Steve Ott will go along nicely with the youth of Tomas Tatar and Dylan Larkin. The Red Wings strength should be their goaltending duo of Petr Mrazek and Jimmy Howard, a duo that produced six shutouts and had Detroit ranked 17th in the NHL with a 2.67 goals against average. The Detroit Red Wings will once again have a say in the improving Eastern Conference this season.
USA TODAY Sports
The Tampa Bay Lightning have made at least the conference finals in back-to-back seasons and head into this year as a Stanley Cup favorite. Steven Stamkos signed a long-term deal to stay in Tampa Bay, while Nikita Kucherov, Ondrej Palat and Alex Killorn provide the depth on the offensive side. Jonathan Drouin makes the Lightning even scarier if he comes anywhere close to playing the way he did in the playoffs, especially against the Pittsburgh Penguins. A goaltending duo of Ben Bishop and Andrei Vasilevskiy is also one of the best in the league, and they allowed 2.41 goals per game, which was fifth in the NHL last season. The Tampa Bay Lightning have all the pieces in place and are in great position to make another run at the cup, as they look for their first title since the 2003-04 season.
The Red Wings are 119-57-8 in their last 184 games playing on 3 or more days rest and 5-16 in their last 21 road games. The Lightning are 67-33 in their last 100 home games and 9-3 in their last 12 Thursday games. The Red Wings are 0-6 in the last 6 meetings in Tampa Bay and 1-6 in the last 7 meetings overall.
The Tampa Bay Lightning have won seven of the last eight meetings against the Detroit Red Wings and have had a load of success on their home ice. The Red Wings struggled big time on the road last year and it's going to be tough to reverse that trend with this being the season opener in Tampa Bay, as the crowd is going to be jacked. I like the Tampa Bay Lightning to get the victory here.
