The Winnipeg Jets look to defend home ice in their season opener as they welcome the Carolina Hurricanes to the MTS Centre.
The Hurricanes look to play their way back into the playoff picture this season and they start with a tough test on the road against the Winnipeg Jets who have playoff aspirations of their own after missing out last season. Carolina has a pretty decent roster led up front by Jordan Staal and Jeff Skinner and will count on the play of Justin Faulk and Noah Hanifin on the blue line and of course they have Cam Ward back in the crease who continues to be a mainstay with the Hurricanes organization. The problem with the Canes though is they don’t have a ton of depth up front and their bottom six isn’t scaring anybody and in a tough environment in their season opener against a Jets side that will have a short leash this year I think they could be in trouble.

The Jets meanwhile are hoping for big things after a dismal season last year that resulted in them having the second overall draft pick in which they selected Finnish prospect Patrik Laine who should be in the running for the Calder as the league’s top rookie. Winnipeg though is enduring their own problems on the blue line as Jacob Trouba has requested a trade and will not be in the lineup for the time being which will force rookie Josh Morrissey into the back end group that includes Dustin Byfuglien, Tyler Myers, and Tobi Enstrom. Winnipeg will likely start Mike Hutchinson in this one after Ondrej Pavelec was sent down to the minors and while that may be their most unstable spot right now Hutch is certainly serviceable for the time being.
The Canes are 4-10 in their last 14 overall and 2-6 in their last eight road games while the Jets are 4-0 in their last four overall and 2-14 in their last 16 against the Eastern Conference. The Jets need to get back to dominating at home and with more depth up top I think it makes the difference as they win their season opener.
