The Line: Winnipeg Jets -105 / Toronto Maple Leafs -105 --- Over/Under: 5.5 See the Latest Odds

The Toronto Maple Leafs and the Winnipeg Jets open the NHL season at the MTS Centre on Wednesday.

The Toronto Maple Leafs were 4th in the Atlantic a season ago and squeezed in to the playoffs with a 40-27-7-8 record. The Maple Leafs were all about offense with three goals per game to rank 5th while launching 32 SOG. The Leafs power play was ranked second at 23.4% but the bad news is opponents averaged 2.9 goals on 32.6 shots so fans of offense generally loved watching this team. Toronto will light the lamp often again with number one center Auston Matthews will once again be the focus of opposing defenses but the team will need Mitch Marmer and newcomer Patrick Marleau  to produce. The Maple Leafs allowed far too many shots on starting goalie Frederik Andersen but he was certainly good enough to help the team to the postseason despite too many lapses where he simply struggled at times to keep the puck in front of him.

Winnipeg Jets vs. Toronto Maple Leafs - 10/4/17 NHL Pick, Odds, and Prediction

The Winnipeg Jets and their fans are hoping this is the season the team breaks their postseason drought. The 5th place squad in the Central finished 40-35-6-1 and obviously on the outside looking in at the playoffs. The high scoring Jets were number seven in scoring at three goals per contest but surprisingly struggled with the man advantage at 18.2% which was #18. The Jets really had issues keeping the puck out of their net with 3.1 goals allowed to rank 27th which falls in line with the number 26 penalty kill that checked in at 77.5%. Winnipeg brought in goalie Steve Mason who will team with Connor  Hellebuyck to help the defensive numbers. The Jets will still go as far as their offense takes them so Nikolaj Ehlers, Mark Scheifele, Blake Wheeler and Patrik Laine have to light the lamp.

Under is 5-1 in Maple Leafs last 6 games playing on 3 or more days rest and under is 4-1-1 in Maple Leafs last 6 vs. Central and Maple Leafs are 1-4 in their last 5 vs. Western Conference. Jets are 7-0 in their last 7 overall and Jets are 6-0 in their last 6 home games and Jets are 5-0 in their last 5 vs. Eastern Conference. Maple Leafs are 0-5 in the last 5 meetings in Winnipeg and over is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings in Winnipeg and home team is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings.

I’m leaning over here but the price is somewhat steep at around -135 especially on opening day when we don’t have a lot of information to go on…
