The Arizona Coyotes and Anaheim Ducks meet Thursday in NHL action at the Honda Center.
The Arizona Coyotes haven’t made the postseason since 2011-12, and they’ll have a new coach in Rick Tocchet leading the way. Tocchet hasn’t been an NHL head coach since his two years with the Tampa Bay Lightning in which he racked up a combined record of 53-69-26. With the retirement of Shane Doan, the Coyotes have embraced this youth movement that could surprise some folks in the league this season. Players such as Tobias Rieder, Brendan Perlini, Max Domi, Christian Dvorak and Jordan Martinook all have this franchise in good hands and create a team that could be ahead of schedule in some peoples eyes. Especially when you throw in former New York Rangers Derek Stepan and Antti Raanta, who provide experience and depth to this squad. The Coyotes will be a fun team to watch early on to see if they can make the turn. The Arizona Coyotes have won three of their last four regular season openers. Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Raanta are questionable for this game.

The Anaheim Ducks have won 46 games each of the last two seasons and return majority of the squad that made the conference finals last year. The Ducks return damn near all of their top point leaders from a year ago, including Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, Rickard Rakell, Jakob Silfverberg and Cam Fowler, a nucleolus that makes Anaheim one of the deepest and most talented teams in the West. The Ducks are also more than set at goalie with a healthy John Gibson and the addition of Ryan Miller, who has a .915 save percentage for his career and has 10 shutouts the last three seasons. The only concern with the Ducks at the moment is the lengthy injury report that includes Ryan Kesler, who will be out indefinitely with a hip injury. The Anaheim Ducks have lost four straight regular season openers. Getzlaf is questionable with a lower-body injury.
The Coyotes are 14-45 in their last 59 road games, 18-39 in their last 57 Thursday games and 4-0 in their last 4 vs. Pacific. The Ducks are 35-17 in their last 52 home games, 19-9 in their last 28 vs. Western Conference and 39-16 in their last 55 vs. Pacific. The Coyotes are 4-10 in the last 14 meetings in Anaheim, 1-5 in the last 6 meetings and the over is 5-2-1 in the last 8 meetings.
This is a lot of juice to lay with the Ducks given their injuries to start the season. Not to mention the Ducks have lost four straight openers and the Coyotes are a young, talented club that could fly out of the gate. So, to avoid the juice, I'm going to side with the over in this spot, as it's a popular trend when these teams meet, as seven of the last eight meetings have produced at least five goals. I expect some offensive fireworks opening night here as well.
