The Colorado Avalanche visit the Prudential Center to take the ice with the New Jersey Devils in a Saturday NHL bout.
The Colorado Avalanche weren’t given much of a chance in their opening night matchup at the New York Rangers but at the end of 60 minutes it was Colorado doing the celebrating in a 4-2 victory. The balanced Avalanche offense received a goal and assist from Matt Duchene while Mikko Rantanen, Tyson Barrie and Gabriel Landeskog joined the scoring column.

The New York attack came late in the opening period with Mika Zibanejad lighting the lamp at 17:28 and then knotting the score with his second tally a mere two seconds before intermission. Unfortunately for the Rangers that was the highlight for an offense that would not score again.
New York goalie Henrik Lundqvist didn’t see a lot of rubber with 22 saves on 25 shots in what was not a great performance while Semyon Varlamov was outstanding with a whopping 37 saves as he was under constant pressure and came up with an ‘A’ performance.
The New Jersey Devils suffered through one of the worse seasons in the league a year ago with just 28 wins to their credit. Altogether the Devils were outscored 241-180 which explains the low win total. The Devils didn’t make wholesale changes but the team did add number one draft pick Nico Hischier and are already asking him to carry the offense. Hischier will help alleviate the pressure on Taylor Hall and with Travis Zajac still nursing an injury the offense will still struggle. The defense is still expected to struggle as Cory Schneider once again doesn’t have enough help in front of him to carry New Jersey.
Over is 5-0-1 in Avalanche last 6 games following a win and over is 4-0 in Avalanche last 4 games playing on 1 days rest and over is 7-1-1 in Avalanche last 9 Saturday games. Over is 6-0-1 in Devils last 7 games playing on 3 or more days rest and Devils are 0-4 in their last 4 vs. Western Conference and over is 2-0-2 in Devils last 4 vs. a team with a winning % above .600. Under is 6-0-1 in the last 7 meetings in New Jersey and home team is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings and under is 18-5-4 in the last 27 meetings.
This certainly isn’t a game to bet if your feint of heart. Given the offensive struggles both teams exhibited a season ago I lean under but will update…
